What is polypropylene?

Polypropylene is a form of plastic, as it’s a flexible resin polymer. Non-woven polypropylene bags are gaining in popularity, due to their low cost of production and high durability. The higher the GSM (grams per square metre that measure the weight and density of material), the stronger the polypropylene will be. As a guide, Albury Enviro polypropylene bags’ GSM ranges between 80 and 120g/m2.

What makes polypropylene eco friendly?

While polypropylene is a product of the petrochemical industry, and is therefore not biodegradable or compostable, nonwoven polypropylene bags are very strong and ideal for reusing. Bags can also be made using recycled materials, and the general consensus following studies investigating the sustainability of PP is it has considerable potential to become a sustainable product. A main benefit of recycling PP is it reduces the consumption of raw, finite resources, such as oil and propane gas. Recycling plastic can also cut energy usage by as much as 88%.

Given its inherent flexibility, PP can be recycled into many different products, including clothing and industrial fibres, food containers, dishware, compost bins, speed humps and gardening apparatus.

What other uses does polypropylene have?

Polypropylene is an extremely versatile material and can be used for a wide range of applications. PP is tough, yet flexible enough to be classed as semi-rigid, and is extremely resistant to heat, chemicals and fatigue. Furthermore, it’s translucent and has integral hinge property. Other uses for PP include clear film packaging, carpet fibres, housewares, rope, labeling, banknotes, stationary, loudspeakers, automotive components, thermal underwear and laboratory equipment.

Polyurethane is a plastic material that can be tailored to become either rigid or flexible. It’s list of applications keeps getting longer and longer, and like polypropylene, polyurethane can be recycled using a range of different methods.

The advantages of nonwoven PP are many. Not only can nonwoven PP be made using recycled materials, it’s a strong, chemical resistant material that is easy to wipe clean. Nonwoven PP can come in a wide variety of colour options, and can be screen printed, printed in full colour, printed in full colour/full bleed, or even laminated with a gloss or matte finish.
