Consumers Must Shun Plastic Bags And Packaging

Published On July 31, 2013

Major cities across the United States, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, are enacting bans against disposable plastic shopping bags. Retailers that disobey the ordinance against plastic bags run the risk of serious fines.

Customers around the world should bring their own re-usable shopping bags with them when buying products from retailers, as it’s a great way to care for the environment.

Here are a few reasons why.

  • Plastic bags take over one thousand years to naturally disintegrate. Over that time, plastic bags usually end up in bodies of water. Plastic bags clog streams and rivers, and choke fish and birds.
  • By reducing the amount of plastic bags used in retail, and avoiding products with excessive packaging, consumers reduce plastic manufacturing, which generates harmful byproducts.
  • Buying fresh produce is a good way to reduce retail packaging, and a great way to support local farmers. By supporting local farmers that don’t use packaging to sell their produce, the cycle is perpetuated and the amount of plastic in rivers and oceans is reduced.
